Nicky Gavron is a member of the London Assembly and Deputy Mayor of London
She is the daughter of a German Jewish refugee who was sent to London as a teenager in 1936. It was her mother’s experience that shaped Nicky’s values and drove her into
politics.
Nicky has been a member of the Labour Party for 35 years, becoming a councillor for Archway ward in Haringey in 1986. She was Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey from
2000-2004 and has been a London-wide Assembly Member ever since.
In 2000 Ken Livingstone made Nicky Deputy Mayor of London, a post she has held for most of the last eight years. He has pledged to reappoint Nicky as his deputy if they are both
reelected on May 1st. Nicky is also a member of the Metropolitan Police Authority and leads for the Mayor on environment and planning policy, overseeing the new
“green” London Plan.
She is internationally recognised for her environmental
expertise. She was a key figure in the establishment of the London Climate Change Agency and the C40 – a worldwide climate change action group consisting of the world’s largest
cities.
Nicky wants Barnet & Camden to continue to benefit from London’s success under Ken and London Labour. Her priorities for the two boroughs include more affordable housing,
things for young people to do, jobs and transport improvements.
Before she entered politics, Nicky worked as a lecturer at the Camberwell School of Art in South London.
Nicky has lived in Highgate on the edge of Barnet and Camden all her adult life, bringing up four children.
