Nicky speaks at Somali youth event
Somali Youth Development Resource Centre celebrated its Seventh Education Annual Achievement Event at the London Irish Centre, Camden, on 13th March 2008. This year more than 80 Somali boys and
girls were awarded for their excellence in front of a 400 strong crowd. The crowd included parents, teachers, local councillors, deputy mayor of Camden and special guest of honour Deputy Mayor of
London Nicky Gavron.
Nicky was delighted with the event and could not believe the large turnout. She was also surprised that 70 people got turned away at the door because the Irish Centre hit its capacity. Nicky shares
a sense of history with the Somali community in Camden as her mother was fleeing Hitler's brutal holocaust for a better life in Britain. The Somali community are fleeing war and genocide for a more
secure life in London.
